If you're in the mood to create your own handmade wreath here are some ideas I've found along the months leading up to Christmas!
You can make a Christmas wreath yourself that is just as beautiful as the professional florist can make and it will be a lot less expensive. The wreath that you make can be used for many years if you pack and store it properly. There are items that you will need to buy at a crafts store and there are items that you can find in your local park to make this unique wreath.
These are the items that you will need to purchase:
A plain undecorated green wreath, plastic or real Christmas tree limbs. A few weeks before Christmas you can go to any Christmas tree lot that sells trees and ask them for the left over branches that they have trimmed from trees. You can really find some beautiful limbs this way. Of course you won't be able to use the wreath again, but some people prefer the real thing.
You will need some florist wire to tie the branches together.
Pick out the prettiest, fullest branches and begin to create your wreath and after you have your wreath all put together decide what you would like to decorate it with.
You will need a hot glue gun and glue sticks for attaching the decorations. Also, some wide Christmas theme ribbon for a nice big bow. You need to buy some red and white medium and small silk poinsettias.
Now, go to your local park and find four or five medium sized pine cones making sure that they are as perfect as you can find.
Now, you have all the materials that you will need to decorate your wreath.
Start by taking a piece of the florist wire and wrapping it around the top of a pine cone, making the wire invisible to the eye. Leave enough of the wire at the top so that you can attach the pine cone to the wreath. Repeat this process until you have all of the pine cones attached to your wreath.
Next, prepare the poinsettias. If they have a long stem on them, clip most of the stem off with wire cutters, leaving about two inches of the stem to attach the florist wire to. Then attach to your wreath. Repeat this process with each Poinsettia.
Last, but not least, it's time to make the big, beautiful bow for your wreath.
After you make the bow, decide if you prefer it on the top or on the bottom of your wreath. Don't forget to cut the ends of the ribbon that are hanging down into a V shape. This will give your bow a finished look.
