"CHRISTMAS" Thread - 1500

Today is January 13, Tjugondedag Jul, or the 20th day of Christmas and the official end of the Christmas activities in Sweden. Now all the electric candles, stars, and christmas tree lights will be turned off and darkness will once again descend across the land. In the 'good ole days', people used to literally throw the tree out the window. You will see this occassionally as people throw them off their balcony to land below, but there are many cautions against it for obvious reasons. We had planned the official Lundgren Family Undecorating Party for Saturday, but as we have both had a tough week, I am now thinking it might be a 'stay in bed and watch christmas movies' weekend and we'll get to the undecorating later. In my former life, one year I did not undecorate until February because I was working two jobs and the christmas boxes stayed in the living room until the following year because former hubby wouldn't help me put them up in the garage. LOL

Then it becomes a Valentine's Day tree. Kind of like the Vamentines Day gingerbread house this year was supposed to be for Christmas.

I have already gotten some Christmas presents for this next Christmas. Some new ornaments for my parents and aunts.

I had an ex- boyfriend who would take the christams stuff off of the tree and then put stuffed birds in the branches for the rest of the year. I thought that was weird until my current husband told me that was an very 'old' swedish thing to do but we couldn't find the stuffed birds here either. I think he must be trying to recreate the tree from some childhood memory because we couldn't find any of the stuff he wanted to use.

I also read on someone's blog yesterday that they take their real tree outside and redecorate it with peanut butter pine cones and strings of popcorn and cranberries to feed the birds. Now that is a cool idea. I always wanted two trees, one for the inside and one for the outside.

Here is a link to internet radio. they have a 'winterscapes' channel that plays instrumental 'holiday' and celtic music. I've switched my office computer to this. A nice subtle way to continue the holiday spirit without people saying are you STILL playing christmas music?

I ran out of kitchen paper (scott towels) this week so I had to raid my Christmas in July stash. :-o

Never fear, now have a new batch of regular paper towels and 1 Christmas one left. Whew!

I'm amazed you still have Christmas paper towels left! Good for you! We finish them off before Christmas Eve on most years.

We did not find it until the last minute. First year we have had Christmas scott towels and toilet paper in the regular grocery. I saved 2 rolls of scott towels (now 1) and 2 rolls of toilet paper for Christmas in July. I am happy to report that the toilet paper survived a washing machine flood in the bathroom.

Christmas seems far away in 100F temps..........but its coming anyway!

I was watching Destination Tokyo yesterday while cooking. I had forgotten it had a couple of Christmas scenes in it!

I do not miss 100F temps, but I have discovered that 70F in a swedish dutch oven aparment makes it about 90F inside. That is quite close enough for me. We won't even discuss what happens when it hits 80 outside. I seriously contemplated throwing myself off the baloncy many times. Bring on the snow!!!

Sorry I didn't know you sent back, oops :) Yes, I really enjoy the kind of decorations that glow in the middle of the night. I have just recently bought the really bright decorations that also move. My favorite part of Christmas is putting up the tree and watching the stores and people get ready, it's really fun.

Had a nice Christmas surprise yesterday! Ziplocs are a new thing in Sweden so I tend to stock up whenI find them and "hide" them in all sorts of knicks and crannies. (Storage space is a rarity in Sweden as well). I pulled out some the other day and they had snowflakes on them! I was surprised we had a Christmas edition as well! Have to actively look for them next year!
