I cannot sew. Fortunately Swedes learn both woodshop and sewing in school. penant flags are the triangular upside down flags you see for various occassions. they are usually made of paper or plastic in throw way versions in school colors for sporting events, but I saw some made of cloth on the Martha Stewart Halloween decoration website and it gave me the idea of making them out of mixed cloth in a common color theme (orange black, orange brown, red green) for each of the holidays with words "Happy Halloween", "Happy Thanksgiving", "Merry Christmas", "God Jul" spelled out and appliqued on top. Next time we go to the cloth shop, we will go through the remnants for material. That should not be too expensive. Mind you, right now this idea only exists in my head, but my beautiful husand is good at taking ideas and making them concrete. :gbhouse:

Excellent idea! :smilecc: So all that is really needed is some Christmas material, cut in a triangle shape, some small dowling( I think that's what their called) and some wood glue or staples and fabric paint. I might be able to do that!

What I was thinking of was more along the lines of string or rope (curtain braid could be classy) to hang the flags from by the straight side (bottom of the triangle). I had even thought of puffing them up a little with fiberfill, but not sure that would work. I am thinking they will be easier to fold up and store if they do not have too much "oomph". I had not thought of fabric paint, now that is GREAT idea!.

Christmas, halloween, fall, etc material would be great, but you could also just use any fabric using those colors. The christmas pennants (sp) could also easily be brought out and strung up for Christmas in July which is mostly a paper decoration holiday for us. Without AC it is just too hot to put up the christmas tree and decorate it. :scene:

This is a good sample of what I had in mind. You could potentially make them for every holiday starting with Christmas!

I checked out the etsy link, now I understand. They look awesome! Thanks! :smilecc:

Well it wasn't feeling a lot like Christmas yet(weather wise that is). Today we got our first snow flakes and my sweet DH brought me home some egg nog. :snowwow:

Just out of curiosity, do our Canadian Christmas friends start putting up Christmas after your thanksgiving in October? or wait until the end of November or early December? Then again, this is probably not the most "objective" group to ask. ;-P
We would have Christmas all year.

I begin bringing Christmas decorations out November 1st. I think most "normal" people here start to decorate the beginning of December. LOL Although I have noticed a few people with their outside Christmas lights on already. :scene:

I woke up WAY too early for a Saturday morning, but I'm wide awake and can't go back to sleep. I'm watching The Christmas Choir on the Hallmark Channel. :D

The Christmas Choir, is that one of the new movies this year?

No, not a new one. The info says it's from 2008. It stars Jason Gedrick and Rhea Perlman. I don't remember ever watching it before though. Now Hallmark is playing Our First Christmas. It's also from 2008. :holly1:

ok. I see it is available here. The mall decorations started going out this week. By Friday, all the lights were up. Some people are putting lights on the balcony, but the eternal darkness is upon us, so I can understand the "urge". First Advent is the official beginning of the celebration with the changing of the linens and putting out the advent candles and candlelabras in windows. Then around Dec. 13, Santa Lucia, the other decorations go up except the tree which is not supposed to go up until Dec. 23. BUT, we are having an american christmas this year, so we will have our thanksgiving dinner and transform the apartment the first weekend of advent. Now that I have a job, it is just too tough to come home and cook a turkey dinner. We might have turkey sausage on Thursday, and cook the big dinner on Saturday.

ON a side note, I was watching a cooking show set in Jamaica this morning and was amazed at how similar some things were to southern cooking: sweet potato pie, okra, etc. I do NOT miss okra. :razzberry: It is not on my list of things for Christmas dinner.
