Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

•Leftovers can sometimes be your enemy. Spoilt leftovers are responsible for 400,000 cases of post Christmas associated illnesses.

•The legendary Christmas pudding is actually an off shoot of the Celtic dish frumenty. The strangeness of the pudding is inspired by the myth that surrounds it. Supposedly people believed it was unlucky to cut a Christmas cake before Christmas Eve. But, the pudding wasn't the only thing that was guarded by a long-standing myth. Mince pie was said to be unlucky if cut with a knife, additionally it was considered to encourage bad luck when eaten outside of the period between Christmas Eve and Twelfth Night. The great thing about Mince pie however, is that it somehow had the magical power to give you good luck if you ate one every day for the twelve days of Christmas.

Although not really related to anything ring talked about in here, I stepped on a nail this afternoon while in my parents' basement. It went right through my shoe and stabbed me In the foot. Good thing my tetanus shots are current.

Me and dd went with my parents to cut down their Christmas tree today. Mom has an antique metal stand and we put it up. It looks beautiful and smells even better :scene:

14 days till Christmas! :scene:
This morning we are going on our annual Christmas tree hunt. There are 15 of us meeting at the tree farm and then coming back here for lunch. I am especially excited this year, due to the fact that last years event got cancelled on account of freezing rain. We ended up buying a small tree from a lot, but I am expecting to find my "Griswold" tree this year.

MM-That sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day. We watched Christmas Vacation last night. I love the part where he drags his family through the snow in search of a tree, and the aha moment when the light shines on the Perfect Christmas tree, then the realization that he forgot the saw. That's good stuff. :smilecc:

My mother in law bought me, hubby, and dd a bunch of new clothes, shoes, and even bought me some new earrings. She also bought dd some new gingerbread kits to assemble and decorate. She's really into Christmas this year. :carolbells:

CandyKane, I love putting together those Gingerbread kits. Has anyone tried to do that from scratch (baked the gingerbread forms from scratch, etc)? :gbhouse:
