Welcome back! Now that Christmas in July is past, I am thinking of Christmas in August to keep myself cheered up. Hubby said the korean theme is "depressing" so I have decided that the Christmas in August movie will be Christmas in The Clouds. This is quite cute and quirky, sort of reminds me of Northern Exposure. Takes place at a Native American run ski resort. Worth a look if you have never seen it.

I am thinking vegetarian since the hotel chef (Graham Greene) is always trying to get people to not eat meat. Hubby suggested Tex Mex, so maybe vegetarian quesadillas? certainly cheep enough and fun!

Hello fellow CAYer's,,,,been busy couple of days around their ol'house. We are only 13 days away from the first day of school so things have been quite busy to get ready for school. Have spent most of this week listening to Christmas music while cleaning house, which always makes that chore much more fun. It also helps in the fact I am finding myself looking at my living room and thinking of where things are going to go. We have bought a new couch and love seat since last Christmas and it is making it interesting with Christmas decor. But all in all I know things will work out and I am just happy to be thinking about this type of problem. Hope everyone has a great day and remember we are only 51 days until the first day of autumn.

It's great "seeing" old Christmas friends and meeting new ones. I've already started thinking about presents; it must be getting close to list-making time.

Hello friends and Merry Friday Christmas!

Merry Friday Christmas?
Yes. You see, I only work every other Friday (but always every Mon-Thur). So the Friday I don't have to work is my Merry Friday Christmas. This only occurs when the kids are in school. They went back to school this past Wednesday. My wife teaches kindergarten, so she is out of the house too.

When I get home from my Friday morning prayer breakfast, I crank up the Christmas music throughout the house and start on my "honey do" list.

So today, I have given my wife the gifts of a clean bathroom, kitchen, and living room.
Got the oil changed in her van. Filled it up with gas. Went to the bank, bowling alley (to pick up forms. She's our league president), post office, and Lowes. Oh ya, and did all the laundry. All of this while listening to Christmas music. They all think I'm CRAZY. Go figure. But she will be very happy when she gets home this afternoon.

I love my Merry Friday Christmases!

I would be quite happy with that too! Had a couple of Christmas blessings today. My unemployment has been reinstated with 40 days left. (mixed blessing) AND.....we found a fullsize (albeit small) turkey at the regular grocery for a VERY reasonable price. So, that goes in the freezer for Thanksgiving. Hubby has never had a "real turkey" dinner as it is usually hard to find and expensive in Sweden. This turkey is about the size of a regular chicken, but that is okay. I now have turkey, cornbread stuffing mix, canned cranberry sauce and canned pumkin. I think I will stick with my original plan and have "american thanksgiving" dinner on Swedish thanksgiving day (same as Canadian). That way the house is decorated for fall for awhile and we do not immediately turn around and change it to Christmas. It seems we usually miss the first two weeks of Advent and wind up getting out the candles, etc the 3rd or (gasp) 4th week. This year, I want to start getting the Advent stuff out in November and really "celebrate" Advent.

I did not read the labels too closely, but I think I have heard of turkey farms in Sweden. But the ones that show up in the stores usually look like desicated chickens. We got the plumper of the two left. The other one was "longer" (like the rubber chickens, hee hee). They are gaining in popularity. You could even order fresh turkey from the local grocery last year, but the price was outrageous. Usually we suck it up and buy two breast filets (the same price as the whole turkey we got today!) or use chicken. I have a great "just like thanksgiving chicken" recipe I will probably make for American thanksgiving day (weekday). My cousin in Belgium has the same problem. She usually serves chicken breasts but ordered a turkey from a local butcher last year because they had company in. Two facebook friends reminded me of the turkey´s innards. Yuck. Now I have to remember how to cook it!

We had a couple of days where it felt like "fall wind" but now we are back to August humidity. I am ready for it to feel like Christmas!

I could be completely wrong but I would guess the lack of turkey is just a result of consumers not being accustomed to it. How popular would turkey be in the U.S. if it weren't for Thanksgiving and Christmas? I come from a family of hunters and wild turkey has always been on the menu, and it's always fried, not baked like the holiday ones. I think it's just a lack of holiday customs associated with it and a lack of consumer demand. Just my 2 cents. And now I'm hungry.

I saw on the news last night where the pumpkin patch/corn maze operators are debating on whether or not they will even open this year because of the dismal crops thanks to the drought. The Fall Pumpkin Patch trip is a family tradition. Hope that they will open. With so much bad stuff this summer, I hope for a cheery Fall. And even cheerier Christmas.

Yes, the drought, fire and storms have depleted cattle, turkeys and much of the country's potatoe/vegetable supply. Prices, they predict, will soar. As a child we once had meatloaf for Turkey Day......so if it comes to that we'll eat with smiles on our faces. And a nice dessert makes Christmas light up!

This is a short post, and I apologize for it being a downer. I was fired from my part-time job yesterday. The average length of full=time unemployment where I live is 14 months so starting Monday I'm looking for part-time again. Many of you are hurting very much also and my heart goes out to you.

Christmas will be celebrated with our spirits and hearts even if our pocket books are 'thin'.

Oh Noel, I am truly sorry. I was so hoping that things were looking up for you. Prayers for you and your family. I have no doubt that you will be able to make the most of your situation and have a blessed Christmas with your family. Family is what's important and you have that. There are so many ways to celebrate and enjoy the season without spending a dime.
