My Christmas Memory #6:
My mother would always decorate the house the day after Thanksgiving.
And that night, after everyone was in bed, my little brother and I would sneak out to the living room and turn on the tree lights for just one more look before we went to sleep.
The tree seemed magical in the completely dark house.

Happy Monday Christmas friends! We bought a new couch this weekend and it will be delivered to the new apartment on tuesday, March 4. It has a "lounger" on one side where you can sit with your legs up and then the other part makes a bed so we could sleep 2 people and maybe a child, or very short person. It was sorely needed and I am trying to curb the temptation to fill it with all new things, but it is exciting!

there is a link to the sofa. We will get an ottoman for the other side at some point in the future, then we can both "relax" with our feet up. I did go ahead and buy 2 sheets and a throw to put over it immediately due ot the cats. :-)

Glad to be back online again after the hectic weekend. Was under the weather on Monday so I stayed home from work...only to be rewarded with a broken water heater. The new one was installed today. Trying to go green, so it is a tankless water heater. With the solar panels, we can almost be "off the grid." This is kind of like a Christmas present for Mother Nature.

This weekend my girlfriend told me a story about how one year she took down her Christmas tree on the weekend after Valentine's Day when she lived in an apartment with a roommate. Jealous!!!

Our local shopping center still has christmas garland, balls and the christmas star on the backside. I guess they forgot that part. :gbhouse:

Looking over our academic calendar, I see that Christmas in August will most likely always fall during registration (aka hell week for admins). Hm.........have to rethink this, I hate not to "celebrate" Christmas any time of the year.

Jolly, how do you usually celebrate Christmas in August?

Christmas in August is usually just a 1 day celebration, August 25, though I put up the "Merry Christmas" sign and banner on the 24th and take them down on the 26th, so we call it a three day celebration. Usually we just have a festive meal, often cold since it is too hot in August to heat up the stove, watch a movie and listen to Christmas music and OTR that day. I have also made Christmas chili and quesadillas. One of my dreams is to sort of have an "outdoor" kitchen on the balcony during the summer with an electric grill (the only kind we are allowed), 2 burner electric stove top and a toaster oven. We have the toaster oven, just have to see if this balcony has an outside electric plug. I see Christmas lights on most of the apartments around there so I think it must or else it is not difficult to run an extension cord. Christmas in August often has an Asian theme so stir fry is not uncommon. When I was on my own I watched Christmas in August, the Korean melodrama even though it really has nothing to do with Christmas, but Perky does not like it, so we usually watch another Christmas movie. Christmas in the Clouds with the Native American cast is another fun one and what led us to the vegetarian chili (southwest and vegetarian, you have to see the movie for that one) and quesadillas, also paying homage to my weird family that has tex mex on Christmas day (I refuse).

Jolly, your Christmas in August tradition sounds like fun! I also like the link you posted for the hotel's celebration! Sounds like a great summer vacation stop!

I think some years QVC has also had a Christmas in August feature. Seems one year I remember the countdown to Christmas on the 25th of every month between July and December, but I could be wrong. My hometown has a Christmas Bed and Breakfast and though it has gotten mixed reviews, I always thought it would be fun to stay there once. Since we are most likely now staying in Sweden, maybe we can visit Tomteland for Christmas in July one year.

I suppose the weekend before "hell week" would be fun. A friday-sunday celebration, but it has been fun to watch it rotate around the calendar and see which day it lands on. Yes, I am weird, that´s why I´m here! :gbhouse:

Got a first look at the new place last night. The kitchen is smaller than ours and I am afraid the bedroom might be as well. WE might wind up having to get a new kitchen table. There is only a half size fridge and no freezer. We do have an extra free standing freezer so now we have to eat up enough stuff so that all fits in the big freezer. It will be interesting to see where everything fits. The cats will be disappointed as this one does not have a "cat flap". We will get a better look on Saturday. There was no electricity, so we were walking around with a flash light like burglers on Christmas Eve.

For my Christmas friends in New England. I hopped over Christmas in July and am now dreaming of Christmas in August.

from someone´s personal blog...but it gives me an idea.........Christmas in August Saturday Night Balcony BBQ could become a new tradition! Gotta get one of those blow up coconut trees..........not sure how that would work with the cats though.....they have claws.

today is a dissertation day at work, which means there is no point in trying to do anything heavy as I may be called upon any moment to play "servant" to the higher ups. So, I am still in Christmas in August mode. I was thinking "christmas in august....august is crayfish time in Sweden....seafood......hm.....christmas seafood...." then I found an australian cooking site with tons of seafood christmas recipes! Which fits my summer christmas theme perfectly and is slightly different than our hawaiian Christmas in July. Here is a sample recipe to die for:

http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/23798/m ... s-desserts

this is getting fun.
