An article I found in the news:Being obsessed with the magic of Christmas makes you happier, experts say. So, if you’re a Peter Pan-type who makes a point out of grabbing the mistletoe and decorating your tree far ahead of season, you’re apparently more nostalgic and in touch with your inner child. Psychoanalyst and founder of MindFixers, Steve McKeown, told UniLad: ‘Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect.
‘In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood.
‘Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extend the excitement!’
Mr McKeown’s comments are backed with evidence from the Journal of Environmental Psychology which reveals how decorations make people think you’re happier. The report, by Carol Werner, Sonja Peterson-Lewis and Barbara Brown, found that people ‘may use holiday decorations on their home’s exterior to communicate friendliness and cohesiveness with neighbours.’
Amy Morin, psychotherapist and author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, told the publication that many, who put up Christmas decorations early are trying to reconnect with their childhood and happier times. Which means you clearly don’t have to feel bad for spending time (and money) on sparkling lights, chubby Santas and fake snow – you’re just letting your inner child out and cherishing great memories.
