What are you doing/did you do to mark Christmas in July?

Postby Mrs.Claus » Fri Jul 25, 2008 10:16 am

What Christmassy things are you going to celebrate CIJ?

I was going to have a turkey, but decided not to thaw it when I looked at the temperature for today. All week it's been in the lower 20Cs and then today the humidity kicks in (it's going to feel like 30C) and we don't have air conditioning. I guess that's how it goes with the best laid plans.

So now I'm going to try to sneak in a little of The Shopping Channel. :scene:

LOL Mrs. Claus
That is the Christmas in July type of thing I am doing right now. Checking out three very cute musical snowmen on TSC. Just window shopping, no buying today. If I can talk the kiddies in to watching Christmas Vacation in awhile I may sit for more than five minutes and enjoy it. Have a great July 25th everyone! Only 5 months til the real deal.
:jump: :throw: :jump:
PS I wish someone would throw a real snowball at me right now. The fans just aren't cutting it today. HEE!HEE!

I've been watching QVC off and on today. I haven't bought anything, but it's nice to look. :D

I had planned on a turkey dinner, but had to have chicken as there was no turkey in the supermarket. Watched a christmas movie 'Jingle all the way' - the kids loved it. Also did some christmas crafting and watched QVC.

This is the first time I have done Christmas In July, and I really enjoyed it. Will be making a note of what we did so that I can plan more for next year.

It was pretty hot here yesterday and the humidity was crazy because we were expecting thunder and/or showers throughout the afternoon.

I had a great time yesterday. I wrote a letter to a group of preschoolers posing as Santa answering their request to visit them during their Christmas in July party.
I had AccuHolidays Radio North Pole playing on my speakers at work loud enough to catch the glance of a few people and one or two stepped in for a brief listen. We're only supposed to play one of two stations at work so don't "rat me out".

In the afternoon, I helped my friend escort twenty 4-5 year olds (with three other adults) to the Carousels and Heritage Train at the waterfront to see Santa and go on the rides. It was a blast! I took a few pictures of my friends Christmas in July tree, I'll upload them tomorrow and post them. The tree was adorable. Wait until you see it.

Tonight we had turkey breasts with dressing and corn niblets. I would have had corn-on-the-cob, but I'm holding out another week or two for our local crops to be ready.

Merry Chrismtas in July, everyone! I guess this would be Boxing Day in July. HaHa.

:jump: Here's the letter I wrote on behalf of Santa.

July 25, 2008

Dear Senior Preschool children and educators,
HoHoHo! Greeting from the North Pole.

I am Santa. I’m sorry to say, I cannot come to visit for your Christmas in July party. I checked my schedule and discovered I have too many things to do today. We’re taking the reindeer for a practice flight, adding stuffing to new rag-dolls and teddy bears; we also have a visit planned at the North Bay waterfront later this afternoon.

I’m writing this letter so one of your teachers can share it with you. I know in another year or two, you will be able to read my letters yourselves. Isn’t that exciting!

Shawna called the North Pole Headquarters and spoke with Jingles, one of my Elves. There are many elves with different jobs around here and I am lucky to have the extra help. I would not be able to get everything done without their help. I know a hard worker named Bob and he needs help from his friends to get the job done. That’s why your parents, teachers and friends need your help sometimes. Do your best to help and don’t forget to ask for help when you need it instead of getting frustrated.

I’m sure you will send me your Christmas Wish List after Halloween; I always look forward to hearing from you. Christmas is 153 days away.

Shawna is a funny one. She always asks for the same four presents every year from me. Do you know what they are? I don’t think you will be able to guess even if you guess for a long, long while. I will tell you. Don’t tell her I told you. Just tell her you know a secret about what she wants for Christmas. Since she was a little girl, Shawna always asks for a can of corn to make sure nobody forgets to make some for Christmas dinner and two Clementine oranges because they’re so sweet and she can’t eat chocolates or cookies. She also asks for a metal slinky that can go downstairs alone or in pairs and makes a slinky sound. The other gift she asks for is a real horse. I tell her every year that I can’t fit a horse into my sleigh and that she lives in an apartment and a horse just wouldn’t have enough room to be happy there. She asks anyways because that’s her special wish. She’s always happy with any surprise I leave for her. I hope you will be happy with the surprises I leave for you in December.

Have a fun day, boys and girls! Bye-Bye-For-Now! HoHoHo Merry Christmas in July!

Love,

Santa Claus
& Jingles (Headquarters Reception Elf)

:smilecc: My husband read it and said, "honey, it's all about you." I just smiled. HaHa.

Just about everyday I've visited a couple of blogs marking Christmas in July by sharing out of print vinyl Christmas music. I've been downloading tinsel tunes all month! Check 'em out.

THis year we will do the same as we do every year.

We have about 20-30 people over for a big Christmas dinner - turkey, ham, roast vegs and Christmas pudding with custard... I cook the whole thing from scratch and it is such a fun night.

It originally started about 10 years ago because a few of us never got to see each other over the Christmas break, so I suggested a Christmas in July dinner and it has blown out to a fully festive occasion.

This year with the recession hurting everyone I have decided to cut it back to the original 6 couples that it started out with...

:elf: Will have music playing most of the day and then will sit down with the family and watch Christmas movies and most likely read The Night Before Christmas just to confuse the kids.

We shall be doing CIJ on the 14th, my birthday. If this hot weather keeps up, I think it'll be chicken salad rather than a turkey dinner! Bit too warm for all that cooking. I've got my thinking cap on to come up with a special post for Holiday Hollow to mark the occasion too. Being hubby's Gal Friday isn't leaving me much free time for my own interests lately. :P

Well if the cool weather keeps up here (unlike where MerrySage is) then I'll definitely cook the turkey I've stowed away. Some people I know might think I'm a bit crazy though, but they should know by now. lol

You're not the only crazy Christmas-one, Mrs. C! We always had the full turkey Christmas dinner at Christmas in July [until last year]. I am certain it will be fabulous! :smilecc:

I was a bit premature (and I really should know better) about the hot weather curtailling any CIJ cooking. Since it was a combination celebration of CIJ and my birthday, we had a big baked lasagne, salad and a dairy cream cake *oink*! A good time was had by all.

All being just us two. But we don't mind. I hope everyone else's celebrations are great.

Well I didn't get to cook the turkey

We went down to the in-laws instead to celebrate hubby's uncle's 60th. He paid for dinner to boot!

Perhaps next year I'll be able to cook a turkey. :muffs:
